This growth journey to many seems as if it happened over night, but it didn’t. Instead, it was a series of intentional daily actions. In those actions God started to shift me little by little. The accumulation of those shifts resulted in major change. Resulting in the woman you see today.
A woman on fire for God. That hears God and desires for others to walk in the same life altering path.
God is so Good in that he desires to leave no one behind. The same way God has shifted my life. He desires to shift your life too.
So where did it all the Growth begin?
It all started with the desire to commit. I’ve shared my testimony. In the past I played with God. I wavered in and out of relationship and commitment with Him. But after a traumatic event, I decided no more wavering I’m going to commit.
What did that commitment look like?
At first it looked like the only thing I knew God desired me to do which was to read my Bible daily and go to church. The slowly grew incorporating regular fasting. I would wake up some mornings and say God I’m gonna fast today and would do it.
These small actions started to open my heart to receive more of who God was. I think we all have a basic level understanding that God sits high and watches over us and he created all things. But He says I’m so much more than that. And God desires to open our understanding of the depth and breath of him through his Bible.
The fast helped me to gain self-control over my sins and to tell my old sinful nature, “you won’t run me, you’re not the boss of me.”
At this point of my life, 5 years ago, I was still doing things that I don’t do now. I wanted to say that because as you grow your convictions grow. What was okay yesterday will no longer be okay today.
For the next 2 years that was my commitment. To attend church every Sunday, Bible Study, and participate in a ministry. Let me be clear doing these things won’t change you if you’re not studying the notes at home and living the same life at outside of church that you do in church. Attending church regularly was my accountability, as I didn’t have an accountability partner yet. If I was attending church I felt convicted not to wild-out during the week. This may not work for you but it did for me.
The Major Shift
Then as I’ve mentioned in the past, I went on a mission trip to Africa and God met me there. He spoke purpose and direction into my life.
Upon my return, I got connected to additional ministries that continued to teach the importance of living God through our actions. In John 14:15 God says, “If you love me, you will keep My commandments.” So I started praying that God will show me my sins and flaws so I could walk pure before Him.
God did just that. In the process I would fast, pray, spend large amounts of alone time with Him, and read my Bible. Following God isn’t hard, it’s a daily choice. A choice that has extreme reward.
Don’t settle for the average relationship with Christ. I encourage today to go all the way. Trust me as you start the journey the Holy Spirit will continue to expose you to teachings, books, videos, people, and more that will lead you on the journey.
Let God be your safe space.
Recap:
1. Study your Bible.
Don’t just read it. Examine the study notes. Read commentaries for deeper understanding. Find free bible studies online that ask you questions.
2. Apply the Word.
Actually implement what you read. In Hebrews there are many examples of godly living. This also applies to the lessons from your church sermons. IMPLEMENT IMPLEMENT IMPLEMENT
3. Establish a life of prayer and fasting.
Not sure where to start you can always listen to the podcast episodes on prayer, episodes 11 & 12; check out my latest prayer journal, Just Pray; and grab a few books from the resource list.
4. Don’t be afraid to walk the journey alone. It will only be temporary.
I would love to hear from you. Send me your questions.
5. Learn your Spiritual Gift and read all you can about it.
Have you taken a Spiritual Gifts Assessment? If not, church out this one by Bryan Carraway.
6. Watch Bible based sermons throughout the week.
The intent is to expand your capacity. Each teacher has their own speciality. Remember to go back to the Bible to ensure what they are teaching aligns, if it doesn’t find someone else.
Some of my favorite Bible-based teachers are Dr. Tony Evans and Apostle Matthew Stevenson.
Thank you for this.. I may be at a crossroad right. Ow and needing direction on where to do ministry at. Needing a closer walk with God. I have been tortured by my thoughts and fear of making the wrong decisions, it’s hard to hear clearly right now.
